Cleaton House Hotel, Westray,
Orkney - Tel: (0) 185 767 7508
Visitors come to Westray to relax and get
away from their busy lives "sooth". We
like to think of them coming here to
enjoy "the sound of silence". The island
has plenty of places to go and see,
walks along the beach or the cliff, and
many come here to see the birdlife.
There is the Noup Head RSPB reserve
where all kinds of seabirds nest, not to
mention the puffins both there and at
Castle o'Burrian, from late April to
early August.
The lochs of
Burness, Swartmill and Saintear all
attract birdlife along with the White
Moss just a short walk from the
hotel. Fishing in the lochs is free and
golf is available on the nine-hole golf
course near Noltland Castle. At
Midsummer's night you could go up to the
top of Fitty Hill to celebrate the
longest day, and watch the sun dip below
the hills for just a short while before
it rises again.
|
|
Of course
the weather is not always kind to us.
For that odd occasion, we have an
excellent library of Orcadian literature
as well as a supply of board games to
while away the time (not to mention our
real ale, well-stocked cellar and more
than thirty malts to try out).

Temple View
Hotel, North Uist – Tel: (0) 187 658 0676
Temple View is conveniently located at the Southern end of North
Uist, approximately 15 minutes drive from Benbecula Airport and a
similar distance from Lochmaddy, with frequent car ferry services to
and from Skye. It is an ideal centre for touring North and South
Uist, Benbecula and Berneray. Day trips can easily be undertaken by
car/passenger ferry to Lewis, Harris, and Barra. |
|
|
The islands are also steeped in history
and there are many significant
archaeological remains such as the
Neolithic burial chamber at Langass,
stone circles and standing stones. In
co-operation with North Uist Estate,
fishing permits for brown trout can be
arranged. Windsurfing, cycling and hill
walking are also among the
possibilities.
The Uists are renowned for their wealth
of bird life and there are RSPB centres
on both North and South Uist. The
tree-less nature of these islands, the
multitude of fresh water and sea lochs,
together with the ever-changing quality
of light presents a challenge to the
most experienced artist and
photographer.
Balivanich, where Benbecula Airport is
located, is a 15 minute drive south.
British Airways flights connect
Benbecula to Glasgow, Stornoway and
Barra. Lochmaddy is only a 15 minute
drive north. Caledonian MacBrayne
operates an all year round service,
connecting the Uists to the Isle of Skye
and the Scottish Mainland. |
